Conceiving
[by S. David] [art by Anna Ravliuc]
Doorway between
Two dimensions
Two realities
More like between
Fantasy and
Reality
But the Veil
Was thin
And exploding
Into another
World
As if
The door way
Was a womb
Birthing
Full formed
They left
They entered
Snorting in
The new air
Their like
Only stories
From myth
And legend
And one by one
The herd came to
Looked into
An artist’s
Cabin
An artist’s
Forest retreat
Then with neighs
And a flashing
Of tails
The unicorns
Trotted off

Music from Other’s Youth
[by S. David] [art by Anna Ravluic]
Old man
What do you
Want from them
So young
Old dog
Prowling
Sniffing
Ah but they are
So alive
So fresh
So vibrant
So bright
So naïve
What do I want
When I look
When I see
When I speak
Why
Their music
Of course
Their music
Brings me
Alive
Refreshed
Renewed
What do I want
Their smile
Their touch
Their music
For me

Conspiracy of Pleasure
[by S. David] [art by Anna Ravliuc]
What
You’d have me
Remember
Remember
Hot blood
In me
Glowing skin
Deep seeing eyes
This is what
You’d have me
Remember
And the sound
Of your voice
A conspiracy
With
My memories
To return me
To life
Why
So that
I would touch
Your body
Only
To have you
Disappear
Again

Passion
[by S. David] [art by Julia Fernandez]
Come sit with me
Have some coffee
Breathe deep
Listen
He lied
He was an actor
An observer
He did not love
Another was
In his mind
With every act
Of passion
Oh here and
There lust
Even some
Tenderness
But it was
Not you
Another
Even as
He was in you
This is true
He wanted
My woman
Even as
I wanted you
I know
We spoke
He speaks
With her now
Even as I you
And all of us
We may lose

Energia Positiva
[by S. David] [art by Julia Fernandez]
In tune with
The night
In tune with
The body
Her body
Pulsing
Energy
So strong
Calling from her
Calling me
She awaits
She wants
She needs
She
So ready
The passion
The energy
Pours from her
Calling
Calling me
My eyes see
My body readies
This is
A reality
This is
Reality

Eve
[by S. David] [art by Julia Fernandez]
And all symbols
All images
Merged
Into the vision
She became
My All
The fruit
I ate
The snake
That seduced
That swallowed
Me
My seductress
My tree
I learned of
Good and
Evil
As all became
One
My eyes
Opened
As I
Emerged
From her

I Watched with Sad Eyes
While the Earth Burned
[by S. David] [art by Lavinia Young]
It was our world
A reality
We had created
And I knew then
It would stand
I was wrong
Wrong of course
For only
In dreams
Did it flourish
We separated
Why
So many reasons
I turned
As I was leaving
And saw you
Shorn of all
Your glory
I watched you
With sad eyes
While
The earth burned
Our reality
Destroyed
By us
Both

Into the Light
[by S. David] [art by Lavinia Young]
I took her
By the hand
Led her out
From the party
We had met
There talked there
Long deep
There was no
Argument
When I took
Her hand
We went to
A quiet pub
Talked more
Then she took
My hand led me
To her place
Led me into
The light not
The dark

Kalmarslott
[by S. David] [art by Dina Brodsky]
Three four steps
And I’ll cross
Into this night
The hid moonlight
Taking me
Certainly
Another place
A different world
Over there
On my left
A castle
Before me
A lake
Just a few
Steps and
I’ll be there
Strange
But I feel
Strange too
Ah and there’s
Such dark
Beauty in
This night
Before me
A few steps
Three four
I’ll be there
Will you
Miss me

Pilgrimage
[by S. David] [art by Dina Brodsky]
An ostrich
Walks down
A forested
A green path
It doesn’t
Belong there
But it is
Whose fantasy
Whose symbolism
Where can it
Stop plant itself
So that it won’t
See what it can’t
Accept and
How often
Do you feel
Out of place
A pretty world
Almost lush
And you know
You don’t
Belong
But
There you are
Anyway
On a pilgrimage
To find
Your place

To Fly Free
[by S. David] [art by Dina Brodsky]
Not caged
Not trapped
Perched
Choosing
Memories
Wings beginning
To open
To spread
For the thought
Becomes heavy
Her picture
On the wall
Always seen
Beginning
To tire
To get old
Flexing
Time
Time soon
To fly free

Broken
[by S. David] [art by Daniel Victor]
And the toy
It walked
It talked
And did silly
Things and
The youngling
Played and
Played let it
Do those things
Youth is gawky
Youth is clumsy
And the toy
Was broken
A tear a sigh
A keening sound
A mournful sound
And sadness
And the youngling
Knew pain inside
Though it tried
It could not
Fix its pet
Human being

La Beauté du Diable [1]
[by S. David] [art by Daniel Victor]
Dark
With flaming lips
And piercing stare
A haunting beauty
Of His own
A magnetism that
Causes men and
Both to stare and
Then mesmerized
They yield and
Kneel humbly
To the very Devil
Himself
Too few
Can withstand
His looks
His silky voice
His sly words
He is
After all
An Angel
Fallen yes
But an Angel
For all that

Serene Demons
[by S. David] [art by Darcy Merante]
Well done
I say
Well done
And now
Take your rest
In the warmth
And the glow
Of the fires
Of Hell
You’ve given
The world above
A solid blow
And each of you
Contributed well
So they were told
So these demons
Rested so serene
In the bowels
Of Hell

The Death of the Lady’s Man 2
[by S. David] [art by Chuchumuru (Carlos Cortes)]
He was a rue
He was a rake
A Don Juan
A Casanova
Dashing magnetic
Energetic once
He approached
A woman she
Would could not
Leave him alone
He did not spend
Many nights alone
And a juggler
So many at once
Until he was found out
Until he was found
And now some of the
Many having compared
Lives celebrate like
The Baptist his head
Lies on a platter
Jealousy is a
Powerful emotion
Hate is another
They cloud reason
Though not vengeance

The Moon Can Give Testimony Only
[by S. David] [art by Pari Ravan]
There were stories
There was a history
Now nothing
Only ruins
What had been
A house
A manor
Where the plain
Ran down
To the sea
Ruins
The moon knows
No one hears now
Nor even sees now
And the moon
Can give
Testimony
Only
To the night

Frightens
Think
Of the world
So large

Into fears
Of what

Saga [part 1] 1
[by S. David] [art by Michael Cheval]
Attend! Hear! Obey!
Wyrd Sisters take up this decree!
Let Spirit animate flesh!
Let there be a new home
For this Soul!
Let it infuse a body!
Flood a mind!
Time and again
A new thread
In the tapestry
Another interweaving
Let this story commence
Let the saga continue
She haunts me still
She haunted me then
She haunts me now
This is a tale that
Does not will not
And perhaps cannot end
And we are both
Cursed to keep fragments
Of memories a scene
A cameo a moment
In time all interwoven
Into the linked tapestries
Of our Souls
From the high plains
Before the Sarasvati
Disappeared they came
And our first chapter
Was laid down she and I
And then across miles
And time our tale
Continues Pharonic Egypt
Many more centuries
The forests of Gaul
Again time now to
The North and Viking we
Still intersect interweave

So he nodded off
Drifted into
Light sleep
And dreams
Raced through
His mind
Hurrying
Scurrying
Before he woke
And she came
Springing full
Grown
Like Athena
More like Sin
Appealing
Temping
In and of
Herself
To be worshipped
And he built
A world
Around her
Vested powers
In her
Powers over
Himself
Though he
Was walking
Among Gods
Walking to her
In adoration
Shameless
Adoration
And he fell
Forward
Before her
Worshipped
Awoke
Refreshed

Thou lonely hearts

Which of the Sisters
Do you give
The name
Depends on what
You believe and
What you know
The Three sisters
Or the One
Whatever
Or Name Her
A Name
A title
A concept
But always
A ’She’
A puppeteer
If you will
What do we
What does she
Know of ‘Free Will’
Coincidence
Synchronicity
Lift your glass
Raise a toast
All dance to
The Piper’s tune
And strings that
Lead us our lives
To that dance and
Perhaps romance

Play with danger

Gets the blood

Being dead
But what a thrill
Playing
On the third rail
Surfing
Balancing
Death
Cheating

The Nerve System

So I’m down again
Here in the underbelly
Of the city the nerve
System and it was
Everyday the same
Thing back then
The Brighton to
The Canarsie line
And school high
School First Avenue
And my friends coming
From all over most
Getting off Union
Square molecules
Traveling to the brain
High school brain trust
And we earned it
Exciting the city number
One years of reputation
Traveling with white
Blue collar workers daily
But we were the brain
Trust of the nerve
System riding the train
The subway that made
New York one and
Number one

Young when the world

Ice age when
The very land was
Different before
The seas took
Into their bosom
A world that only
Legend now knows

The Mediterranean
Had not appeared
Great works by
The hand of man
Have since dis-
-appeared and Ys
Is no more
Still when the sun
Strikes the sea
At strange angles
Light is cast upon
The seabed
Passing through
Once windows
Of a drowned
Cathedral fish
Swim through
Works that time
Finally overcame

Angels on my Shoulders 2

Worse than the ghosts
That sometimes haunt me

Angels of the Light
And of the Dark my choice
They say I must chose
But I don’t want to
I want to let things be
And for a change be
Passive receptive be
Acted upon not the one
That takes the lead
Let it be her not me
A relationship what else
I’m tired of pushing and
I’m trying to convince
These angels to stop
Harassing me let the
Woman choose
This time go away
I don’t need these
Angels on my shoulders

Angels on my Shoulders 2
[by S. David] [art by Miguel Tio]
Really they’re there
Worse than the ghosts
That sometimes haunt me
Now I have to deal with
Angels of the Light
And of the Dark my choice
They say I must chose
But I don’t want to
I want to let things be
And for a change be
Passive receptive be
Acted upon not the one
That takes the lead

Haunted Room
[by S. David] [art by Miguel Tio]
Trusting
A promise is
A promise and
His word
He always kept
And so
She believed
And so
She waited
And so
She grew old
Awaiting
His return
Dead
He died
In the war
She never
Heard
She was not
Next of Kin
And they
Never knew
About her
And so
She sits
Waiting
Dead
Long ago
Still
She sits
Waiting

Return of the Cheshire Cat
[by S. David] [art by Frank Krasicki]
Last seen
Leaving its smile
Behind
After posing
Questions of
Ill-repute
Philosophizing
On living life
Why not fantasy
But now behold
The Dreamer
Dreams again
On the road again
The road goes on
Again
To when to where
And there in space
In a new place
Without trees
The air shimmers
A glimmer of
Sparkling
White flashes
And a smile
Is born reborn
In the air
Though
Nothing is there
But teeth meet
Lips appear
Drawn up into
The notorious
The glorious
Smile we
Remembered

Metamorphose
[by S. David] [art by Beatrice Burel]
Change
Growth
Perhaps
Just perhaps
Maturity
Sharp edges
Once so
Present
Once so
Prevalent
Slowly
Dissolving
Disappearing
A logic
A consistency
Is demanding
Recognition
Acceptance
Superiority
Control
And she did
Not like
The way
Her life was
Spinning
Out of
Non-control
She found
Herself
Actually
Planning
For her future

World Gone Wrong
[by S. David] [art by Joel Carpenter]
I looked at her
And I knew
So wounded
Her entire world
Gone wrong
It was written
In how she
Carried herself
It was written
On her face
She wasn’t a loser
She had lost
I watched a dude
Pick her up
No surprise there

The Trip of Infinite Steps 1
[by S. David] [art by Maria de Echevarria]
To be that which
You wish to be
A long journey
And the path is
Not always straight
Nor so narrow many
Branches many choices
Loom up in front of you
And she pressed
Forward upon
Her chosen road
No guideposts
Save from within
And every decision
She made she
Believed carried her
Onwards on her trip
She was so careful
Yet never seemed
To arrive where she
Thought her Path
Would lead though
Her steps were small
And infinitely many

Me, Talking to Myself in a Ray of Light
[by S. David] [art by Richard Gins]
It finally happened
To me too.
Too many of my friends
Were
This way already,
But,
Now, it reached me too,
For I just can’t seem
To find someone with
A willing ear,
I mean someone, female, new.
The guys have heard it, know it,
Live it themselves, yeah, they’re
Doing it too, so they say.
Anyway,
It was a cloudy, funky
Kind of day,
I was standing outside,
Trying to figure it out,
Talk myself through,
Out loud, it seems.
Finally made some decisions
When,
Well, the Gods must have
Approved, the clouds
Parted a space and
If anyone had come along,
They’d have seen
Me, talking to myself
In a ray of light.

Legs and a High Skirt
[by S. David] [art by Richard Gins]
She
Finally decided
She
Wasn’t as ugly as
She
Thought she was. Everybody says
She
Has great legs, a great body and
She’s
Good to look at, so
She’s
Taking the risk to show the world.
She’s
Coming out of her shell.
She’s
Put herself on display.
She’s
Actually having fun.
She’s
Enjoying the looks men give
Her.

Orange Juice and News
[by S. David]
We awoke to bright lit
Stark shadows cutting the ground.
Up the block,
Kids played on the street.
Across the orange juice-
Out of our window,
We watched them
Pause
To let cars go by.
We could almost feel the heat
And light
Hammering them
Into monuments
To the morning.
And then the day’s paper
Came.
She said, “But let’s go to the park.”
I said, “To watch people,
When the paper’s unread?”
She said, “Shall we always be so
Ritual?”
So I burnt the morning paper.

Secret Passages Running Deep
Beneath External Nature
[by S. David] [art by Marty Maehr]
The old ways
Hidden
In hiding
Secret
And so few
Survive
Who can
Walk the land
Feel
The power flow
Beneath
Deep beneath
The ground
In tune
Attuned
To the secrets
Of nature
Not what
Is seen
Like dowsing
The Druids
Of old
Strolled
Across the land
Tasting
Testing
The ley of
The land
Using
Until
Overwhelmed
Until
The White Christ
Put an end
And the secrets
Became secrets
Again

The Messenger II
[by S. David] [art by Sarah Renee Valeri]
Sacred innocence
Wandering her way
Implied implied
The message
A doe
White in
Darkest night
Surely a messenger
Surely God driven
Coming this way
Apparition
The Seeing Eye
Comprehends
The beating heart
Loud
Loud
To the ears
The hearing of
The Watcher then
Stillness
And yet
There is
Meaning
The shotgun

Profane Love
[by S. David] [art by John Jacobsmeyer]
Well that’s one way
To end the story
Make the guy pay
For bringing reality
Profane love into play
He didn’t notice really
He no longer had
A use a chance
Gone gone they were
Wild beasts once and
After they began they
Didn’t wouldn’t stop
Until he no Krishna
Turned blue heart
Attack and that was
Why she made sure
If no more him for her
She’d fix the bastard

Feather at the Museum
[by S. David] [art by Brendan Coyle]
Just because she has
Wings, it doesn’t mean
She’s an Angel. Feather
Is young and beautiful,
Once you get used
To her red eyes. But
They match her hair
And though she hangs
Out in some strange
Place, she does do
Galleries and when
Her wings are folded,
Even museums. It’s
Easier in winter
When she actually
Dresses up, but
It was summertime
And I don’t know
What other powers
She has, I mean, I
Saw her wings, while
We were there,
But no one else
Saw or they just
Didn’t have anything
To say. New Yorkers are
So very jaded anyway.

Before the Tree of Knowledge
[by S. David] [art by Dave Tree]
And what would
Milton say after saying
So much of the plan
The Heavenly Plan
To put man in his place
Or put woman in hers
Knowing knowing
Tasting the Fruit of
The Tree of Knowledge
Of Life and Death
Knowing life inside
The parenthesis
And still we forget
Still we chose
Pleasureless paths
As we grow past
The toys the delights
Of innocence but
Remember we still
Were let off easy
Pity the poor snake

1784 Soul Date
[by S. David] [art by Ed Rosko]
She was perfect,
He knew it,
A meeting of minds,
A meeting of bodies
And it went on,
More and more
He explored her
Depths with joy,
Not knowing
He was her goal,
Not realizing
He was the bullseye
On her target,
He was committed.
They were at
Her place,
After a special,
Wonderful date,
Two years, when
It began; the snake
In her emerged,
Wrapped itself
Around his neck,
Began to eat
His soul.

The Visitor
[by S. David] [art by Gary Heller]
Old abandoned
Windows gone
Frames too
Holes in the roof
How long ago
No one with
Memories returns
No one seeking
Memories returns
Just there
But there
Are visitors
Birds
Small animals
And coming in
Through a once
Window a plant
Comes visiting
Perhaps it will
Stay put down
Roots

Hanging from Tree
[by S. David] [art by Sandra van Hoek]
Cute yes
That squirrel
Hanging so alertly
From the tree
Alert for any
Predator
Seeking a warm
Dinner
Scouting the land
For its own
Dinner of nuts
And seeds.
Just living
Its life
As best it can
As long as it can

Genesis IX
[by S. David] [art by Alex Shabatinas]
Worlds within worlds
And the universe is
How guess theorize
Will you know
And knowing
What will you
And the universe
And the world
Egg within egg
And the egg
Is cracked
Open and
Another world
Comes into being
Layer upon layer
Realities
Come to be
Grown
And life
Sometimes
A God
Why not
Do you know no
Do you know yes
So life proceeds
And gains its
Own cunning
Eat an apple
From a tree
And seeds
Of comprehension
Of understanding
“Male and female
He created them “

The Summoning 1
[by S. David] [art by Craig La Rotonda]
An Angel of Death
An Angel of Mercy
Not all are summoned
By the Grim Reaper
Some are rather
Cajoled
Seduced
Into the next
Journey
By other sweeter
Angels
And the few
The rare
Brave hearts
Indeed
Are those that seek
To seduce Death
Instead
