Saga [part 1] 1
[by S. David] [art by Michael Cheval]

Attend! Hear! Obey!
Wyrd Sisters take up this decree!
Let Spirit animate flesh!
Let there be a new home
For this Soul!
Let it infuse a body!
Flood a mind!
Time and again
A new thread
In the tapestry
Another interweaving
Let this story commence
Let the saga continue

She haunts me still
She haunted me then
She haunts me now
This is a tale that
Does not will not
And perhaps cannot end
And we are both
Cursed to keep fragments
Of memories a scene
A cameo a moment
In time all interwoven
Into the linked tapestries
Of our Souls

From the high plains
Before the Sarasvati
Disappeared they came
And our first chapter
Was laid down she and I
And then across miles
And time our tale
Continues Pharonic Egypt
Many more centuries
The forests of Gaul
Again time now to
The North and Viking we
Still intersect interweave

Practical Mythology 4
[by S. David] [art by Michael Cheval]

So he nodded off
Drifted into
Light sleep
And dreams
Raced through
His mind
Hurrying
Scurrying
Before he woke
And she came
Springing full
Grown
Like Athena
More like Sin
Appealing
Temping
In and of
Herself
To be worshipped
And he built
A world
Around her
Vested powers
In her
Powers over
Himself
Though he
Was walking
Among Gods
Walking to her
In adoration
Shameless
Adoration
And he fell
Forward
Before her
Worshipped
Awoke
Refreshed

March of the Lonely Hearts [1]
[by S. David] [art by Michael Cheval]

Not I
But I play
For thee
In thy multitudes
That line
To dance
To my accordion’s
Sad music
For love is
On my lap
Her my arms
Surround
And the Gods approve
But thee
Thou lonely hearts
That dance
A march
Through this
World
This mansion
Of beauty
The Gods Willed
To us
Alone
This life
Alone
In line
One behind
Another
Alone

Nocturne 5
[by S. David] [art by Michael Cheval]

And Fate is a joker
A teller of tales
A singer of songs
One in Three
Three in One
Which of the Sisters
Do you give
The name
Depends on what
You believe and
What you know
The Three sisters
Or the One
Whatever
Or Name Her
A Name
A title
A concept
But always
A ’She’
A puppeteer
If you will
What do we
What does she
Know of ‘Free Will’
Coincidence
Synchronicity
Lift your glass
Raise a toast
All dance to
The Piper’s tune
And strings that
Lead us our lives
To that dance and
Perhaps romance

Inanna
[by S. David] [art by Josephine Maisonet]

Danger
Danger
Danger
Inanna’s
On the loose
On the prowl
Again
She’s looking
She’s hot
She’s the pickup
Queen
Inflaming
Men and boys
Goddess
Of lust
And war
She intoxicates
Men
To riot
To battle
She takes on
Entire armies
Takes in
The men
Each leaving
Satisfied
Each contributing
His seed
For a next
Generation
Of warriors

Surfing the Third Rail
[by S. David] [art by Dennis W Bernhardt]

Play with danger
It’s sharp
Gets the blood
Flowing we say
The adrenalin
Pumping
And it takes
A fine balance
To keep from
Being dead
But what a thrill
Playing
On the third rail
Surfing
Balancing
Death
Cheating

The Nerve System
[by S. David] [art by Logan Hicks]

So I’m down again
Here in the underbelly
Of the city the nerve
System and it was
Everyday the same
Thing back then
The Brighton to
The Canarsie line
And school high
School First Avenue
And my friends coming
From all over most
Getting off Union
Square molecules
Traveling to the brain
High school brain trust
And we earned it
Exciting the city number
One years of reputation
Traveling with white
Blue collar workers daily
But we were the brain
Trust of the nerve
System riding the train
The subway that made
New York one and
Number one

Drowned Cathedral
[by S. David] [art by Brigid Marlin]

Come let us go
Seek the time before
Time when man
Fully formed was
Young when the world
Was not as it is
The age before the age
Before the last
Ice age when
The very land was
Different before
The seas took
Into their bosom
A world that only
Legend now knows
Atlantis Mu and
The Mediterranean
Had not appeared
Great works by
The hand of man
Have since dis-
-appeared and Ys
Is no more
Still when the sun
Strikes the sea
At strange angles
Light is cast upon
The seabed
Passing through
Once windows
Of a drowned
Cathedral fish
Swim through
Works that time
Finally overcame

Ancient Future
[by S. David] [art by Olga Spiegel]

Have courage
Walk into
Your dreams
Coffee fueled
Exhausted sleep
Where buildings
Stutter
Porticos come
And stay
From days
You did
Not know
Elements
Suggested
By fantasies
Robots and
Strange biologies
And you look
Into your futures
Create passwords
To recall
Your dreams
The hell with
Sanity
You can live it
Days of
Ancient
Futures
Whatever
World
You choose

Will you
Miss me
Darling
In fall
As the chill

Sleep alone
In spring
As life

Will you
Miss me

For I’m leaving
Now a far
Shore calls
Will you
Miss me

The Monk’s Torments
[by S. David] [art by Olivier Zappelli]

Memories
The Lord
Death women
And more
Hold witness
Against you
And they
Haunt you
Taunt you
And you
Can’t run
They ‘re there
Part of you
So you wake
And you had
Dreamed one or
Another or
More and
You can’t
Juggle your way
Out so you
Sweat
Still
They are
Now daylight
And still
They are
Before your
Eyes torment
Torment
You turn
To self
Flagellation
And still
No
Now what

Angels on my Shoulders 2
[by S. David] [art by Miguel Tio]

Really they’re there
Worse than the ghosts
That sometimes haunt me
Now I have to deal with
Angels of the Light
And of the Dark my choice
They say I must chose
But I don’t want to
I want to let things be
And for a change be
Passive receptive be
Acted upon not the one
That takes the lead
Let it be her not me
A relationship what else
I’m tired of pushing and
I’m trying to convince
These angels to stop
Harassing me let the
Woman choose
This time go away
I don’t need these
Angels on my shoulders

Haunted Room
[by S. David] [art by Miguel Tio]

Trusting
A promise is
A promise and
His word
He always kept
And so
She believed
And so
She waited
And so
She grew old
Awaiting
His return
Dead
He died
In the war
She never
Heard
She was not
Next of Kin
And they
Never knew
About her
And so
She sits
Waiting
Dead
Long ago
Still
She sits
Waiting

Return of the Cheshire Cat
[by S. David] [art by Frank Krasicki]

Last seen
Leaving its smile
Behind
After posing
Questions of
Ill-repute
Philosophizing
On living life
Why not fantasy
But now behold
The Dreamer
Dreams again
On the road again
The road goes on
Again
To when to where
And there in space
In a new place
Without trees
The air shimmers
A glimmer of
Sparkling
White flashes
And a smile
Is born reborn
In the air
Though
Nothing is there
But teeth meet
Lips appear
Drawn up into
The notorious
The glorious
Smile we
Remembered

Metamorphose
[by S. David] [art by Beatrice Burel]

Change
Growth
Perhaps
Just perhaps
Maturity
Sharp edges
Once so
Present
Once so
Prevalent
Slowly
Dissolving
Disappearing
A logic
A consistency
Is demanding
Recognition
Acceptance
Superiority
Control
And she did
Not like
The way
Her life was
Spinning
Out of
Non-control
She found
Herself
Actually
Planning
For her future

World Gone Wrong
[by S. David] [art by Joel Carpenter]

I looked at her
And I knew
So wounded
Her entire world
Gone wrong
It was written
In how she
Carried herself
It was written
On her face
She wasn’t a loser
She had lost
I watched a dude
Pick her up
No surprise there

The Trip of Infinite Steps 1
[by S. David] [art by Maria de Echevarria]

To be that which
You wish to be
A long journey
And the path is
Not always straight
Nor so narrow many
Branches many choices
Loom up in front of you

And she pressed
Forward upon
Her chosen road
No guideposts
Save from within
And every decision
She made she
Believed carried her
Onwards on her trip

She was so careful
Yet never seemed
To arrive where she
Thought her Path
Would lead though
Her steps were small
And infinitely many

Me, Talking to Myself in a Ray of Light
[by S. David] [art by Richard Gins]

It finally happened
To me too.
Too many of my friends
Were
This way already,
But,
Now, it reached me too,
For I just can’t seem
To find someone with
A willing ear,
I mean someone, female, new.
The guys have heard it, know it,
Live it themselves, yeah, they’re
Doing it too, so they say.
Anyway,
It was a cloudy, funky
Kind of day,
I was standing outside,
Trying to figure it out,
Talk myself through,
Out loud, it seems.
Finally made some decisions
When,
Well, the Gods must have
Approved, the clouds
Parted a space and
If anyone had come along,
They’d have seen
Me, talking to myself
In a ray of light.

Legs and a High Skirt
[by S. David] [art by Richard Gins]

She
Finally decided
She
Wasn’t as ugly as
She
Thought she was. Everybody says
She
Has great legs, a great body and
She’s
Good to look at, so
She’s
Taking the risk to show the world.
She’s
Coming out of her shell.
She’s
Put herself on display.
She’s
Actually having fun.
She’s
Enjoying the looks men give
Her.

Orange Juice and News
[by S. David]

We awoke to bright lit
Stark shadows cutting the ground.
Up the block,
Kids played on the street.

Across the orange juice-
Out of our window,
We watched them
Pause
To let cars go by.

We could almost feel the heat
And light
Hammering them
Into monuments
To the morning.

And then the day’s paper
Came.

She said, “But let’s go to the park.”

I said, “To watch people,
When the paper’s unread?”

She said, “Shall we always be so
Ritual?”

So I burnt the morning paper.

Secret Passages Running Deep
Beneath External Nature
[by S. David] [art by Marty Maehr]

The old ways
Hidden
In hiding
Secret
And so few
Survive
Who can
Walk the land
Feel
The power flow
Beneath
Deep beneath
The ground
In tune
Attuned
To the secrets
Of nature
Not what
Is seen
Like dowsing
The Druids
Of old
Strolled
Across the land
Tasting
Testing
The ley of
The land
Using
Until
Overwhelmed
Until
The White Christ
Put an end
And the secrets
Became secrets
Again

Loud
Loud
To the ears
The hearing of

Stillness

Meaning

Profane Love

Well that’s one way
To end the story
Make the guy pay
For bringing reality
Profane love into play
He didn’t notice really
He no longer had
A use a chance
Gone gone they were
Wild beasts once and
After they began they
Didn’t wouldn’t stop
Until he no Krishna
Turned blue heart
Attack and that was
Why she made sure
If no more him for her

Feather at the Museum
[by S. David] [art by Brendan Coyle]

Just because she has
Wings, it doesn’t mean
She’s an Angel. Feather
Is young and beautiful,
Once you get used
To her red eyes. But
They match her hair
And though she hangs
Out in some strange
Place, she does do
Galleries and when
Her wings are folded,
Even museums. It’s
Easier in winter
When she actually
Dresses up, but
It was summertime
And I don’t know
What other powers
She has, I mean, I
Saw her wings, while
We were there,
But no one else
Saw or they just
Didn’t have anything
To say. New Yorkers are
So very jaded anyway.

Before the Tree of Knowledge
[by S. David] [art by Dave Tree]

And what would
Milton say after saying
So much of the plan
The Heavenly Plan
To put man in his place
Or put woman in hers
Knowing knowing
Tasting the Fruit of
The Tree of Knowledge
Of Life and Death
Knowing life inside
The parenthesis
And still we forget
Still we chose
Pleasureless paths
As we grow past
The toys the delights
Of innocence but
Remember we still
Were let off easy
Pity the poor snake

1784 Soul Date
[by S. David] [art by Ed Rosko]

She was perfect,
He knew it,
A meeting of minds,
A meeting of bodies
And it went on,
More and more
He explored her
Depths with joy,
Not knowing
He was her goal,
Not realizing
He was the bullseye
On her target,
He was committed.
They were at
Her place,
After a special,
Wonderful date,
Two years, when
It began; the snake
In her emerged,
Wrapped itself
Around his neck,
Began to eat
His soul.

Perhaps it will
Stay put down

Worlds within worlds
And the universe is
How guess theorize
Will you know
And knowing
What will you
And the universe
And the world
Egg within egg
And the egg
Is cracked
Open and
Another world
Comes into being
Layer upon layer
Realities
Come to be
Grown
And life
Sometimes
A God
Why not
Do you know no
Do you know yes
So life proceeds
And gains its
Own cunning
Eat an apple
From a tree
And seeds
Of comprehension
Of understanding
“Male and female
He created them “

An Angel of Mercy

Indeed
Are those that seek

Don’t doubt it
Beyond imagination
Beyond fantasy
Beyond religion
There are worlds
Outside the mind
Life is different
Conditions lead
To different rules
Thoughts
Solutions
Intelligences
And visions
Are sometimes
Granted to a few
But picture this
“My beamish boy”
As it is said
A skinny dude
Looking very much
Like you or me
Older and
Having studied
Texts you’ll never
See comes to
Takes power on
A world you’ll
Never see
Call him
What you will
‘Ruler’ ‘monarch’
‘King’ I rather like
‘Magnus’ yes
‘Magnus’ has

The Kiss of the Snake
[by S. David] [art by Chris Bleicher]

It was damaged
No longer paradise
But then it never was
This was Eden
After The Fall
You remember ’The Fall’
Eve made it with
The snake
Ate the fruit
Realized
What she’d done
How she now was
Inveigled Adam
Did him too
Left him
To dally again
With the snake
God caught Adam
Caught Eve too
Snared the snake
Punished them all
The snake
Worst of all
Told him to crawl
Made his kiss
Fatal then gave
The Devil free run
So unfair
So very unfair
Unjust too for
God being God knew
Ahead of time
In advance
Unless He was
Just phonying
An excuse

Forward
[by S. David] [art by Michael Hyman]

It was not
A turning night
It was not
A stopping place
It was
A calling
To start anew
To forward
Her life
She created
A pentacle
A safe place
Safe from
The marks
The words
Of those
She feared
Candles
Lit lights
Undressed
Sat
Meditated
Before
Beginning
The words
The incantation
She would have
Begin
Her redemption

Black Velvet
[by S. David] [art by Mike Hyman]

But you yearn
For that taste
Of honey
For the losing
Of self
The moment
Of ecstasy
You learn
And she was
Slightly
Slightly kinky
You couldn’t handle
“Hurt me”
But you could
Deal with
“Control me”
“Make me surrender”
“Force me”
So you put
The cuffs
She gave you
On her hands
Behind her back
And she leaned back
With a smile
You gently wrapped
The black velvet
Of her hair
Around your fist
Pulled her up
Forced her
To her knees

She was complaining
“Sex sex is that all
You think about”
To me as she
Shook her bare breasts
In my face
She had put
Some music on
I don’t know
Who was playing
I wasn’t paying
Any attention
I was mesmerized
By the movement
Of her nipples
Then she said
“You can dance
With me”
Still watching
I asked her
“Is this some
Sort of test
Then I’m about to fail”
And reached for her

On the 7th Day
[by S. David] [art by Randy J Lagana]

And God created
Woman
Yeah it depends
Oh which version
In Genesis
You accept
The ’rib’ story
Or at the ‘same time’
But in either case
On the 7th day
God rested
Now look a here
Let’s take
Creation
For the moment
As a fact
But now consider
For God or Goddess
Creation’s a big deal
And womankind
A bigger one
More complicated
Than man
And looking at life
The way we see it
It’s quite likely
That a Goddess
Did it
And she rested
And star bathed
On the 7th day

Lady G
[by S. David] [art by Randy J Lagana]

There is always
A price to be paid
A deed that
Marks the end
The end
Of innocence
So paid Eve
So paid Persephone
So paid Lady G

Innocence
A time of innocence
A time to wonder
In Paradise
To pet unicorns
To be loved
To love
For moments
To hide from
Fate
To ride to fly
Free

Know
Some God
Some demigod
Some trickster
Will intervene
Will bring
The world home
Will open eyes
The story of woman
The story of man
Such was
Such is
Such will be

Highway to Paradise Lost
[by S. David] [art by Bertram Matysik]

It is said
‘The road
To Hell
Is paved
With good
Intentions’
He took
The other one
The highway
To Paradise Lost
Money
Possessions
Women
Too much
At least
For him
Boring living
In a paradise
Of his family’s
Making
All handed him
As he grew up
He found he was
Losing his
Innocence
Delved into
Sin
She was
Lovely
He couldn’t
Wait to lose
Paradise he’s
Successful
Once again
His own terms
This time

Losing Paradise
[by S. David] [art by Dr. Gerd Matysik]

Deh yum
This was not
Eve
Mother
Of all
Yet she set
Me up
Me still
Innocent
In those days
She played
The serpent’s
Part
You can see
How she
Reasoned with me
Showing me
Tempting me
Forbidden fruit
Made me
Sweat and
Dance then she
Offered them
Freely
Eventually
My mind cleared
My eyes opened
I was no longer
Innocent
Having tasted
The fruit
Hot damn

Pearl Necklace 2
[by S. David] [art by Barbara Listenik]

Our Lady of Sorrows,
She fades still more
As the days pass
Through her centuries.
Gifts from the Goddess
Do not ease her pain.
The offerings of Angels
Do not bring relief.
Paler than the pearls
Of the necklace one
Angel brought, she has
Lost even the colour
Of life, she has sunk
Beyond despair. Love
Has left her, Death
Awaits her and she, him.

Kiss of Death 2
[by S. David] [art by Barbara Listenik]

If you could
Cut off
Death’s Head,
You’d probably
Find her body
Was perfection
And her caresses
Delicious.
They’d thrill you
As nothing ever
Did before.
If you could, you’d
Forever,
Make her
Your captive.
Her kiss, however,
Kills.
Even
With
Your eyes shut
She’ll steal your
Spirit from your
Body, hey, but you’ve
Earned that
Comfortable rest.
And you don’t want
Keep her at bay,
But to keep her
With you always.
Oh,
To be able to
Seduce Death,
Hmmm.

The Kiss of Death [3]
[by S. David] [art by Barbara Listenik]

Lies
All lies
The Grim Reaper
A lie
All the stories
Of the Hooded One
No
Not even
Hooded
No
Not male
Just as Morrigan
Death
Is female
Spell it
With capitals
DEATH
Female
All Female
Save
Her face
So close
Your eyes
Ease into
Her embrace
Know
Ecstasy
Her perfect body
Let your senses
Lead you
To her
Embrace
Touch her
Perfect body
Let her take
You in
Know the
Perfect coupling
You and
Death

Pearl Necklace 1
[by S. David] [art by Barbara Listenik]

Nothing could
Wake her
From her
Despair,
So deep,
It drained her,
It bleached all life
From her.
Mother Gaia,
The Gods,
Their Angels
All tried
To bring
Her
Joy.
An Angel brings
A gift,
A pearl necklace,
Butterflies,
In their millions,
Flutter past her,
The Tree of Life
Blossoms with
Bold alien flowers,
A rose in her face,
Nothing.
She stood waiting
For Death
To claim her,
Love had left her.

Peace at Last 1
[by S. David] [art by Barbara Listenik]

It’s over,
It’s done.
Let the waters rage,
Let the shore be barren.
I am
Who
I am.
Let my very
Struggle
To breathe
Be fraught with
Constant pain,
Yet,
I am
Who
I am
And it is this
That gives me
Peace
At
last.
My passion,
My symbol is
The Rose and
This is the Truth;
Though I bleed,
I am
Life’s own triumph
For
I can
Love
And loving
Know
Peace at last!

Arba Nikhnesu
[by S. David] [art by Shoshana Brombacher]

Many lifetimes
Many identities,
Bodies and
Callings,
This soul
Has traveled
Across dimensions,
Realities, worlds
And soared
Through many
Strange skies,
Lived in depths
And on surfaces
Of many worlds,
And each life
I became,
I limited myself
To its bounds.
Humans are
Interesting though,
For some and
Others for a while,
They may cross
Some of the lines,
Pass through the
Veils and even
Dance on the Spiral
Path.
One time
I was a Jew,
A good Jew,
A Rabbi even,
One to whom
The Gates of
Paradise opened.
Three others
Ascended with me
One, whose soul
Was too weak,
Sent his current
Mind into insanity.
Another, renewed,
Wanted to stay
And let his body die.
The third became
Still more wise
And returned in
Peace. And I,
I saw and
Remembered.
I came back
To preach a
Different Path
And for this,
They call me,
Heretic!

David Dances 1
[by S. David] [art by Shoshannah Brombacher]

I looked and I saw
David the King and
I knew the Lord promised
David his servant
Victory glorious victory
Over his foe for David
Served his Lord with
A full heart an open heart
The battle the victory
Won then David rejoiced
Came into Jerusalem
Leading his men from
The battlefield straight
To his city clothes battle
Torn half naked yet
David danced rejoicing
In his Lord into the city
His wife from the palace
Looked down didn’t
Approve thought him
A fool with no dignity
Didn’t understand
Naturally he dumped her

David Dances 2
[by S. David] [art by Shoshannah Brombacher]

The Lord Is
The Lord Lives
The Lord Gives
His liegeman
His servant
His promised
Victory
And before Him
To His Sanctuary
On feet made strong
And arms that
Prevailed by His
Words with an
Unwounded body
By His protection
With a simple Soul
That rejoices in
His Name

I give thanks
And lead my men
Before him to joy
In His Might
Before Him I
The Lord’s Fool
Dance my thanks

So she drew
So I write
