Genevieve
[by S. David] [art by Lauren Mills]

Will you
Miss me
Darling
In fall
As the chill
Begins
In winter
When you
Sleep alone
In spring
As life
Begins again
Will you
Miss me
Darling
For I’m leaving
Now a far
Shore calls
Will you
Miss me

The Monk’s Torments
[by S. David] [art by Olivier Zappelli]

Memories
The Lord
Death women
And more
Hold witness
Against you
And they
Haunt you
Taunt you
And you
Can’t run
They ‘re there
Part of you
So you wake
And you had
Dreamed one or
Another or
More and
You can’t
Juggle your way
Out so you
Sweat
Still
They are
Now daylight
And still
They are
Before your
Eyes torment
Torment
You turn
To self
Flagellation
And still
No
Now what

Angels on my Shoulders 2
[by S. David] [art by Miguel Tio]

Really they’re there
Worse than the ghosts
That sometimes haunt me
Now I have to deal with
Angels of the Light
And of the Dark my choice
They say I must chose
But I don’t want to
I want to let things be
And for a change be
Passive receptive be
Acted upon not the one
That takes the lead
Let it be her not me
A relationship what else
I’m tired of pushing and
I’m trying to convince
These angels to stop
Harassing me let the
Woman choose
This time go away
I don’t need these
Angels on my shoulders

Haunted Room
[by S. David] [art by Miguel Tio]

Trusting
A promise is
A promise and
His word
He always kept
And so
She believed
And so
She waited
And so
She grew old
Awaiting
His return
Dead
He died
In the war
She never
Heard
She was not
Next of Kin
And they
Never knew
About her
And so
She sits
Waiting
Dead
Long ago
Still
She sits
Waiting

Return of the Cheshire Cat
[by S. David] [art by Frank Krasicki]

Last seen
Leaving its smile
Behind
After posing
Questions of
Ill-repute
Philosophizing
On living life
Why not fantasy
But now behold
The Dreamer
Dreams again
On the road again
The road goes on
Again
To when to where
And there in space
In a new place
Without trees
The air shimmers
A glimmer of
Sparkling
White flashes
And a smile
Is born reborn
In the air
Though
Nothing is there
But teeth meet
Lips appear
Drawn up into
The notorious
The glorious
Smile we
Remembered

Metamorphose
[by S. David] [art by Beatrice Burel]

Change
Growth
Perhaps
Just perhaps
Maturity
Sharp edges
Once so
Present
Once so
Prevalent
Slowly
Dissolving
Disappearing
A logic
A consistency
Is demanding
Recognition
Acceptance
Superiority
Control
And she did
Not like
The way
Her life was
Spinning
Out of
Non-control
She found
Herself
Actually
Planning
For her future

World Gone Wrong
[by S. David] [art by Joel Carpenter]

I looked at her
And I knew
So wounded
Her entire world
Gone wrong
It was written
In how she
Carried herself
It was written
On her face
She wasn’t a loser
She had lost
I watched a dude
Pick her up
No surprise there

The Trip of Infinite Steps 1
[by S. David] [art by Maria de Echevarria]

To be that which
You wish to be
A long journey
And the path is
Not always straight
Nor so narrow many
Branches many choices
Loom up in front of you

And she pressed
Forward upon
Her chosen road
No guideposts
Save from within
And every decision
She made she
Believed carried her
Onwards on her trip

She was so careful
Yet never seemed
To arrive where she
Thought her Path
Would lead though
Her steps were small
And infinitely many

Me, Talking to Myself in a Ray of Light
[by S. David] [art by Richard Gins]

It finally happened
To me too.
Too many of my friends
Were
This way already,
But,
Now, it reached me too,
For I just can’t seem
To find someone with
A willing ear,
I mean someone, female, new.
The guys have heard it, know it,
Live it themselves, yeah, they’re
Doing it too, so they say.
Anyway,
It was a cloudy, funky
Kind of day,
I was standing outside,
Trying to figure it out,
Talk myself through,
Out loud, it seems.
Finally made some decisions
When,
Well, the Gods must have
Approved, the clouds
Parted a space and
If anyone had come along,
They’d have seen
Me, talking to myself
In a ray of light.

Legs and a High Skirt
[by S. David] [art by Richard Gins]

She
Finally decided
She
Wasn’t as ugly as
She
Thought she was. Everybody says
She
Has great legs, a great body and
She’s
Good to look at, so
She’s
Taking the risk to show the world.
She’s
Coming out of her shell.
She’s
Put herself on display.
She’s
Actually having fun.
She’s
Enjoying the looks men give
Her.

Orange Juice and News
[by S. David]

We awoke to bright lit
Stark shadows cutting the ground.
Up the block,
Kids played on the street.

Across the orange juice-
Out of our window,
We watched them
Pause
To let cars go by.

We could almost feel the heat
And light
Hammering them
Into monuments
To the morning.

And then the day’s paper
Came.

She said, “But let’s go to the park.”

I said, “To watch people,
When the paper’s unread?”

She said, “Shall we always be so
Ritual?”

So I burnt the morning paper.

Secret Passages Running Deep
Beneath External Nature
[by S. David] [art by Marty Maehr]

The old ways
Hidden
In hiding
Secret
And so few
Survive
Who can
Walk the land
Feel
The power flow
Beneath
Deep beneath
The ground
In tune
Attuned
To the secrets
Of nature
Not what
Is seen
Like dowsing
The Druids
Of old
Strolled
Across the land
Tasting
Testing
The ley of
The land
Using
Until
Overwhelmed
Until
The White Christ
Put an end
And the secrets
Became secrets
Again

The Messenger II
[by S. David] [art by Sarah Renee Valeri]

Sacred innocence
Wandering her way
Implied implied
The message
A doe
White in
Darkest night
Surely a messenger
Surely God driven
Coming this way
Apparition
The Seeing Eye
Comprehends
The beating heart
Loud
Loud
To the ears
The hearing of
The Watcher then
Stillness
And yet
There is
Meaning
The shotgun

Falls

Profane Love
[by S. David] [art by John Jacobsmeyer]

Well that’s one way
To end the story
Make the guy pay
For bringing reality
Profane love into play
He didn’t notice really
He no longer had
A use a chance
Gone gone they were
Wild beasts once and
After they began they
Didn’t wouldn’t stop
Until he no Krishna
Turned blue heart
Attack and that was
Why she made sure
If no more him for her
She’d fix the bastard

Feather at the Museum
[by S. David] [art by Brendan Coyle]

Just because she has
Wings, it doesn’t mean
She’s an Angel. Feather
Is young and beautiful,
Once you get used
To her red eyes. But
They match her hair
And though she hangs
Out in some strange
Place, she does do
Galleries and when
Her wings are folded,
Even museums. It’s
Easier in winter
When she actually
Dresses up, but
It was summertime
And I don’t know
What other powers
She has, I mean, I
Saw her wings, while
We were there,
But no one else
Saw or they just
Didn’t have anything
To say. New Yorkers are
So very jaded anyway.

Before the Tree of Knowledge
[by S. David] [art by Dave Tree]

And what would
Milton say after saying
So much of the plan
The Heavenly Plan
To put man in his place
Or put woman in hers
Knowing knowing
Tasting the Fruit of
The Tree of Knowledge
Of Life and Death
Knowing life inside
The parenthesis
And still we forget
Still we chose
Pleasureless paths
As we grow past
The toys the delights
Of innocence but
Remember we still
Were let off easy
Pity the poor snake

1784 Soul Date
[by S. David] [art by Ed Rosko]

She was perfect,
He knew it,
A meeting of minds,
A meeting of bodies
And it went on,
More and more
He explored her
Depths with joy,
Not knowing
He was her goal,
Not realizing
He was the bullseye
On her target,
He was committed.
They were at
Her place,
After a special,
Wonderful date,
Two years, when
It began; the snake
In her emerged,
Wrapped itself
Around his neck,
Began to eat
His soul.

The Visitor
[by S. David] [art by Gary Heller]

Old abandoned
Windows gone
Frames too
Holes in the roof
How long ago
No one with
Memories returns
No one seeking
Memories returns
Just there
But there
Are visitors
Birds
Small animals
And coming in
Through a once
Window a plant
Comes visiting
Perhaps it will
Stay put down
Roots

Hanging from Tree
[by S. David] [art by Sandra van Hoek]

Cute yes
That squirrel
Hanging so alertly
From the tree
Alert for any
Predator
Seeking a warm
Dinner
Scouting the land
For its own
Dinner of nuts
And seeds.
Just living
Its life
As best it can
As long as it can
